Description
The Michigan Senate Democratic Fund (MSDF) is a full-time political organization dedicated to protecting the Democratic majority in the Michigan Senate. To help ensure this success, MSDF is seeking a highly motivated and organized Communications Director. The Communications Director will be responsible for interfacing with a selection of districts across Michigan as well as assisting with caucus-wide communications. The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities
The Communications Director works closely with the Executive Director and other caucus staff to drive messages and execute an impactful communications strategy. The Communications Director’s duties include serving as a spokesperson for the caucus and as the architect of the cycle-long and day-to-day communications strategy and operations related to the caucus’s campaigns and goals.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director on the development and execution of a statewide caucus communications strategy.
- Coordinate communications and serve as primary contact and on-the-record campaign spokesperson for the caucus and its leadership with local, state, and national press.
- Work closely with caucus partners and allies to ensure coordinated communication efforts on critical issues.
- Work with caucus members, candidates, and staff to develop messaging tailored to individuals and districts.
- Draft press releases, statements, and additional messaging documents for members to improve coordinated response to critical issues.
Requirements
Job Requirements
- Experience working for political organizations, campaigns, government, or in public relations.
- An understanding of state legislative politics or an interest in learning.
- Willingness and ability to quickly create and maintain strong working relationships with the press, members, partners, and coworkers.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, with an ability to create content on a wide variety of policies and platforms (including video).
- The desire to think creatively about the most effective ways to communicate and then execute ideas.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Travel in-state, as well as evening and weekend work, will be required.

- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time while operating a computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Must be able to move about inside an office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Flexibility to work extensive hours outside of normal operating hours.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position while driving or riding as a passenger in a car because occasional statewide travel is necessary. MSDF will reimburse mileage.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience. MSDF offers health and dental insurance to full-time employees.
