The office of Rep. LaMonica McIver is seeking a creative, ambitious Communications Assistant. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who loves writing, digital storytelling, and politics, and wants to gain hands-on experience developing communications strategy in a fast-paced congressional office.
Position Overview: The Communications Assistant will play a pivotal role in Rep. LaMonica McIver’s communications team, supporting the creation and execution of the Congresswoman’s digital and written communications. This position will focus on maintaining an active online presence, creating content, managing social media platforms, and drafting written materials including speeches, releases, and quotes. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, possess strong writing skills, have keen attention to detail, and be able to excel in a fast-paced environment. This position is not a typical 9-5 and requires the flexibility to be available outside of typical work hours. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Grow, shape, and manage Rep. McIver’s digital presence by developing engaging content for social media, identifying new storytelling opportunities, and managing day-to-day social media operations ensuring timely, relevant content.
- Draft and edit press releases, speeches, and talking points.
- Design digital content including graphics, photos, and videos to communicate key messages and legislative priorities.
- Maintain and update the Congresswoman’s website, ensuring timely and relevant information is posted.
- Draft and send owned communications (newsletters, updates, etc.) to constituents, keeping them informed about Congresswoman’s work and priorities.
- Work collaboratively with the district office to ensure a strong local media and digital presence, and support outreach efforts.
- Assist in press outreach and handling of media inquiries.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling content.
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms, website management, and digital marketing tools.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage and prioritize a variety of assignments at one time.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and consistency in all communications.
- Experience with graphic design and video production tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite) preferred.
- Demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and willingness to learn. We value strong instincts, initiative, and good judgment as much as prior experience.
- New Jersey ties and previous Hill experience are a plus.
