Organization:  Lee Kaplan for Houston Mayor is looking for a Campaign Manager to join and manage our growing team.  The campaign for Houston Mayor is in November 2023.

Job Purpose: The principal responsibility of the campaign manager is to create cohesion and alignment for a well-funded campaign for Mayor of Houston, Texas, the nation’s 4th largest city.  The campaign manager will manage and support director level staff and be responsible for developing and overseeing the Operations and Infrastructure, Field and Organizing, Political Strategy, and Fundraising Success with a team of consultants.

The ideal candidate is well organized and works well under pressure, while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. The campaign manager directs, implements, and coordinates the day-to-day operation of the campaign.  The campaign manager is responsible for the development and management of staff in consultation with the consulting team. A high level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality are necessary. Position requires excellent writing and verbal communication skills, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with timely follow through. The ability to interact well with a diverse staff at all levels of the organization is crucial to this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising the staff of a large, well-funded citywide campaign
  • Working alongside a team of senior advisors and consultants to set the campaign strategy, plans and budget
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to make sure that short-term and long-term priorities get completed
  • Proactive approach in identifying organizational gaps and executing a plan to fill them
  • Ability to work a standard campaign schedule which includes evenings and weekends
  • Ability to manage people and work laterally alongside an experienced consultant team
  • Strong work ethic that includes but not limited to:
    • Comfort with demands and expectations of the role
    • Ability to manage staff and provide leadership to all elements of the campaign
    • Ongoing commitment to victory
    • Professional loyalty to the campaign and candidate
  • Develop and manage a campaign budget and handle cash flow in coordination with the Finance Director
  • Oversee all aspects of the campaign and building a campaign plan including fundraising, field, communications, and political outreach, ensuring that proper goals are set and achieved 
  • Manage relationships with key campaign stakeholders 
  • Familiarity with NGP VAN and basic computer tools (Word, Google Drive, etc.)
  • Confidentiality and professional discretion
  • Self-confidence and a humbled spirit to do the largest and smallest task
  • Flexibility with a great sense of humor

Minimum Requirements: Candidates must possess 3-5 years of campaign, advocacy, or political experience, as well as have experience working with and managing consultants and vendors. Knowledge of Houston politics and being bilingual is a plus. Familiarity with NGPVAN, Votebuilder and current campaign tools is a must.
