Job Description: Press Secretary for Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly

The Press Secretary will report to the Senior Advisor for Communications in executing the mayor’s multimedia communications strategy, responding rapidly to communications and external media needs, and identifying and executing projects and products that advance the messages, goals, and initiatives of the City of Chattanooga and the Mayor’s Office.

What we’re looking for, in short:

Someone with a passion for media, government and politics who wants to learn and grow. Someone who wants to help improve the City of Chattanooga and get the training and experience needed to eventually be a communications director for a mayor, senator, governor or similar principal. 

Responsibilities:

  • Draft talking points, press releases and other materials for Mayor Kelly and city government 

  • Serve as main point of contact for news media, working with appropriate staff to provide timely responses 

  • Staff Mayor Kelly at events where media is present 

  • Monitor news coverage and social media conversations to keep tabs on how city initiatives are being discussed.

  • Work as part of a team to develop material for use in videos, social media posts, and other appropriate avenues to promote city initiatives.

  • Pitch story ideas to local and national media outlets about city initiatives.

  • Track and analyze local community and political issues to plan for possible messaging strategies.

  • Assist in other related capacities as needed.



Requirements

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in communications; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. 

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Knowledge of best practices in communications, including emerging trends and technologies.
