Press Secretary – Democratic Governor’s Race (South Carolina)
Position Overview
The campaign for a Democratic candidate for Governor of South Carolina is seeking an experienced, driven Press Secretary to lead media relations and message amplification. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator who thrives in fast-paced political environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Report directly to the Campaign Manager and participate in senior staff discussions and decisions.
Media Relations & Messaging
Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the campaign, managing daily engagement with state and national media.
Build and maintain strong relationships with political reporters, editors, and producers.
Draft and distribute press releases, statements, and talking points aligned with the campaign’s strategic messaging.
Pitch earned media opportunities that highlight the candidate’s platform, values, and vision for South Carolina.
Message Development & Rapid Response
Work with the Communications Director to craft and execute daily press plans that drive the news cycle.
Lead rapid response efforts to shape narratives and counter misinformation or opposition attacks.
Collaborate with research and policy teams to ensure accuracy, consistency, and message discipline.
Support the candidate and senior staff with media preparation for interviews, debates, and public events.
Events & Press Operations
Manage logistics for press conferences, tours, and campaign events, including media advisories and credentialing.
Coordinate with advance and scheduling teams to ensure seamless press coverage and visibility.
Prepare briefing materials and oversee media availability logistics.
Digital Integration
Partner with the digital and social media teams to align earned and owned media strategies, maximizing impact across platforms.
Coordinate with social media manager, monitor media and social channels for coverage trends, opportunities, and threats.
Qualifications
- 2-3 years of experience in: a campaign, or at a firm or organization managing political communications, journalism, or government/public affairs.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Deep commitment to Democratic principles, including kitchen table economic issues and speaking to working families.
- Experience in rapid response, message discipline, and proactive media pitching preferred.
- Availability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as the campaign demands.
Location & Compensation
- Location: Columbia, SC (with frequent in-state travel).
- Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience; benefits and travel reimbursement provided.
